silver gelatin prints, 2018

This is one of the oldest and largest trees in Washington DC, estimated to be at least 250 years old. Someone long ago must have noted something special about this tree and left it in place while the surrounding forest was felled. Now part of the National Arboretum, this protection has remained and intensified; it's roots have been given space to thrive, it is carefully trimmed and maintained, and a lightening protection system has been installed.

My children and I have named this giant Bertolt, after a children’s book.
